A stay-at-home mom has limited “kid-free” time during the day, but a side hustle is a great way to fill up that time and earn some extra income.
These are 5 easy side hustles for a stay-at-home-mom.
I’m Katrina, and a part of a mother & daughter duo that started our business on Etsy and have since expanded to our own website + blog. Having my own blog has been a dream and have finally made that happen! I enjoy sharing our favorite tips & tricks on all things Etsy, opportunities to work from home, and experiences as a first time mama.
Become a Freelancer
A great option for a side hustle for moms is to become a freelancer.
A freelancer is self-employed and usually works with multiple clients at a time, offering some type of services. The type of services can vary, and have a wide range of categories. These are just a few of the types of freelance services out there:
- Virtual Assistant
- Social Media Management
- Content Writing
- Data Entry
- Graphic Design
If you have previous experience in any of these areas, that would be a great area to focus on.
Working as a freelancer gives you that freedom to work the hours you’d like, and potentially do the type of work that you enjoy and that you excel in. It is an easy side hustle, as you have control over the amount of jobs you want to take on, and can fit that work in between naps and bedtime, or do on weekends when you have some extra help.
This can be just a side hustle, but can definitely become a full-time income as well, as it just depends on the amount of work you want to take on and the amount you are paid.
Where to find freelance jobs
If you’re interested in becoming a freelancer, there are a few places to look for potential gigs, but a great place to start is Upwork. It is a space for freelancers and businesses to come together for quality work, and there are a lot of opportunities out there.
To get started on Upwork it’s really pretty simple! You just need to create a profile in the area of work you’re interested in and you will then need to be approved. If there are too many other freelancers applying for the same type of work, there is a chance you may get your profile rejected. If that happens, there are still ways to get approved again, so don’t let that stop you!
The only downfall to Upwork is the fee that it takes out of your earnings. I do think that it’s worth it to find those initial jobs, and now that I grew relationships with my clients, I was able to move off Upwork and continue working with them minus the fees.
Taking surveys is another great side hustle, as it is something that can fit in the little gaps of the day: when the baby is nursing, while the kids are playing outside, etc. Most surveys are about 15-20 minutes, so it is something you can do in small blocks of time, or you can sit down and do a couple surveys an hour.
Where to find surveys
There are a few different sites that you can do surveys on, but SurveyJunkie is a great option. There are always plenty of surveys to choose from, and you have the option to redeem your points for gift cards, to PayPal, or through a bank transfer. Some sites can only be exchanged for gift cards, so that’s why SurveyJunkie is a great site!
It is definitely more of a side hustle, as it can be difficult to make enough to really contribute to your income. But it is a wonderful way to make a bit of extra cash that you can use to treat yourself!
Another way to make money as a stay-at-home mom is doing sweepstakes. This is something that you may not hear of as often, but is definitely something that can work! Sweepstakes is a great side hustle for moms, as it is very flexible and if you are able to consistently commit some time each day to it, you can definitely be successful!
Personally, I have won things like tickets to an amusement park, a Yeti cooler, a year of Spotify, etc. At the time that I won these, I was putting in about an hour or two a day filling out sweepstakes and I think the biggest key is finding sweepstakes that you can fill out daily and save those to fill out each day.
Where to find sweepstakes
One place to find a large variety of sweepstakes is on Sweepstakes Advantage. You can create an account with them, and just do the free account, or you can do SweepstakesPlus so you are able to enter in the local sweepstakes as well.
You will want to check the “New Sweepstakes” page daily, and there will be categories from each day ranging from “Daily” to “Monthly”, as well as the different states. Finding the daily ones that you can enter every day gives you a better chance to win, as well as entering the ones from your state.
It is a side hustle that isn’t guaranteed, as you can go long stretches without winning anything. But, if you are consistent and are able to put the time into it, you have a great chance to win anything from a vacation to concert tickets. Want cash instead? Sell whatever you win and use the money instead!
Create Handmade Goods
Creating your own handmade items is another great side job for moms. It is very flexible and realistic for moms, as well as anyone else needing a job from home, and one that is continuing to grow in popularity. This one is not quite as reliable as a job like a virtual assistant, because there can be months that you make in the thousands, and months where you only make hundreds. That’s not the case for everyone, but just something to be aware of.
If you already are creating something either for personal reasons, or just for friends and family, that is a great place to start. But you can also think of what skills you have! Do you create digital designs? Digital products are HUGE on e-commerce sites, but also means it can be a bit over-saturated.
Do you enjoy painting? Making t-shirts? There is such a wide range of items to create and sell, just be sure to find what fits you and what will actually sell. I started painting signs for myself and for other people, and that’s what made me realize I could actually sell what I was making!
You also don’t need to limit yourself to only physical products or only digital products, you can do both if that’s what you want! You can even do items from completely different categories, it may actually benefit your shop.
Where to sell handmade goods
Etsy is definitely the most popular place to sell handmade items. It makes it easy for buyers to find items in different categories, displays popular items, etc. It is very user-friendly, and has a lot of great benefits.
But Etsy has been making some big changes, so although Etsy is a great place to start, you should also expand your business to other avenues to be sure you have control over your business and have more than one option for revenue.
Shopify is another great option for your own online shop. It’s very user friendly and simple to set up. There is also Squarespace, and a few other sites that can also work well for a shop. I just highly recommend having more than one way of selling your items.
Sell Used Items
A final side hustle for stay-at-home moms is to sell used items.
Do you have a lot of stuff laying around your house that you don’t need anymore? Or do you enjoy shopping at thrift stores and finding the best deals? Selling these items may be a great option!
This is especially true if you can find in-demand products, or if you have items you were given for free, since you will be making a bigger profit. Not only is this a great way to make extra money, but it can also be a way to clear up some much-needed space in your house!
Where to sell used items
The first way you can do this is through local sites like Craigslist, Offerup or LetGo. These sites involve either having people come to your house, or meeting them in public places. So this needs to be something you are comfortable with. It is easier, since you won’t need to worry about shipping and can sell much larger items, such as furniture.
Ebay is another great option, because it is very easy to set up and does already get a lot of traffic. Electronics do especially well on Ebay, so if that is something you have, then you may be a lot more successful. You do need to ship items on Ebay, but if you already have shipping materials (old Amazon boxes work great!) then it can be very simple.
As a stay at home mom, a side hustle is a great way to still have something that is your own, as well as feel that you are contributing to your family’s income. Find the side hustles that you enjoy, so that you keep the drive and excitement to continue!
